Build a handbook

ManagerUpdated July 31, 2026

Create a handbook on the web, break it into steps, and fill each step with text, photos, video, files and checklists.

The builder is one screen: steps on the left, the step you’re editing in the middle, and a phone-sized preview on the right that shows exactly what your staff will see.

Start one

  1. Open Handbooks in the sidebar.
  2. Choose New handbook.
  3. Give it a title in the toolbar — it saves as you type.

Add steps

Choose Add step on the left, then name it. Drag steps to reorder them; the order is the order your staff go through.

Your staff can’t jump ahead — a step opens only after every step above it is finished.

Fill a step with blocks

In the middle panel, choose Add block and pick a type:

  • Text — instructions, policies, anything you’d write down.
  • Photo — one or more images.
  • Video — the block opens for confirmation once they’ve played it.
  • File — a PDF or document to keep.
  • Quiz — a question with answer choices, or a written answer. See Add quizzes and checklists.
  • Checklist — items they have to tick off, one by one.

Every block takes a title and, if it helps, a short description. Blocks inside a step can be done in any order.

Check it before it’s real

  • The right panel is the live mobile preview — what you see is what the phone shows.
  • The play button in the toolbar runs the whole handbook the way a learner would, quizzes and all.
  • Too narrow a window hides the preview. Widen the window or toggle it back on.

Nothing gets lost

  • Edits save on their own. The toolbar shows Saving…, then Saved just now.
  • Ctrl+Z undoes, Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes. Deleting a step or block always asks first.
  • The toolbar shows the handbook’s size. Past a point you’ll see a warning suggesting you split it, and at the hard limit no new blocks can be added — existing work still saves.

Publish it

Choose Publish when it’s ready. That freezes a version your staff can be assigned to — see Publish and assign a handbook.
